These are one of the most competitive graduate courses and many students end up not receiving any placement offer. This should not put you off as there are different routes to studying medicine. We have put to together this guide to help any prospective students thinking about studying medicine to consider all the different options and make the necessary preparations.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UCAS Application Statistics <br \/><\/strong>In 2021 entry there were 28,690 applications to UK medicine courses but only around 9500 places available. Each year the number of applications to Medicine courses are increasing but the number of places is not increasing at the same rate. Hence you need to have a backup plan.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcpdt.org.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/UCAS-Medicine.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-99053\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bcpdt.org.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/UCAS-Medicine-1024x345.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"860\" height=\"290\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bcpdt.org.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/UCAS-Medicine-1024x345.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.bcpdt.org.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/UCAS-Medicine-300x101.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.bcpdt.org.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/UCAS-Medicine-768x259.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.bcpdt.org.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/UCAS-Medicine-600x202.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.bcpdt.org.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/UCAS-Medicine.jpg 1335w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 860px) 100vw, 860px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Applying for Medicine Courses<br \/><\/strong>We have identified different application routes you may need to consider and plan for so that you can increase your chances of getting into Medicine.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Apply through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucas.com\/about-us\">UCAS<\/a> to study Medicine in UK. <\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>You can apply for up to four medicine courses (usually 5-6 years)<\/li>\n<li>Fifth option must be non-medicine (e.g. Bio Medical Science)<\/li>\n<li>Requires additional <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucat.ac.uk\/\">UCAT<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.admissionstesting.org\/for-test-takers\/bmat\/\">BMAT<\/a> tests depending upon the University selected<\/li>\n<li>Have medical works experience or completed suitable training courses\n<ul>\n<li>Apply for works experience at a local surgery, care home or hospital<\/li>\n<li>Training Courses\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biograd.co.uk\/\">Clinical Skills &amp; Medical Research &#8211; 5 Day Course<\/a> (Costs ~\u00a31096)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.premedprojects.co.uk\/\">1-Week Hospital Work Experience<\/a> (Costs ~\u00a31640)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/educationprojects.co.uk\/medical-projects\/\">Medical Work Experience Course<\/a> (Costs ~\u00a31750)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucas.com\/undergraduate\/after-you-apply\/types-offer\/extra-choices\">UCAS Extra<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/digital.ucas.com\/search\">UCAS Clearing<\/a> does offer an alternative option where students have not received any offer or cancelled their offer. However, for medicine courses this route is very unlikely to lead to successful offers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Apply through UCAS to study alternative Medicine related courses<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Bio Medical Science and other suitable courses (usually 3-4 years). Can be chosen as the fifth option as part of your Medicine course applications.\n<ul>\n<li>Some courses after one year allow you to transfer to Medicine course but this is very competitive and only a small percentage achieving high grades get a chance<\/li>\n<li>Complete the course and apply for Medicine as a second degree.\n<ul>\n<li>Standard 5+ years Medical degree. In England you\u2019ll have to pay the tuition fees yourself for the first four years (usually \u00a39,250). Can apply for living costs via student finance. Fifth year you\u2019ll be eligible for support from NHS Business Services Authority for living cost and tuition fee support.<\/li>\n<li>Accelerated 4-year graduate entry programme. In England you\u2019ll have to pay the first \u00a33,465 in first year yourself and apply for student finance for the rest. Years 2 to 4 you\u2019ll be eligible for support from NHS Student Bursaries.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/rmbf.org\/medical-students\/medicine-as-a-second-degree\/\">More Information<\/a> <br \/><br \/><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Take a GAP Year and apply through UCAS following year to study Medicine in UK. <\/strong>The chances of success the next year is not guaranteed.\n<ul>\n<li>Success would depend upon the number of students applying that year<\/li>\n<li>Your exam results for A Level or other course<\/li>\n<li>Your UCAT or BMAT scores<\/li>\n<li>Additional works or travel experience during GAP year<br \/><br \/><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Apply to Study Medicine abroad<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Most UK students have to self-fund to study abroad.
