However, eyebrows will be raised at the absence of any Lions players from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/blog\/2017\/jul\/10\/nick-evans-british-lions-new-zealand-third-test\" title=\"\">the drawn tour of New Zealand in the summer<\/a> \u2013 or the England rugby union team who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/2017\/mar\/11\/england-jonathan-joseph-scotland-seal-six-nations-match-report\" title=\"\">won a second successive Six Nations title<\/a>.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"element element-rich-link element--thumbnail\">\n<p> <span>Related: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/blog\/2017\/nov\/27\/f1-2017-hamilton-versus-vettel-mclaren-season-s-best-and-worst\">F1 2017: from Hamilton versus Vettel to McLaren; the season\u2019s best and worst | Giles Richards<\/a> <\/p>\n<\/aside>\n<p>Only two rugby union players have made the shortlist in the past 10 years in the form of Jason Robinson and Leigh Halfpenny. Owen Farrell, in particular, must be wondering what he must do to earn recognition. This year Farrell not only inspired England to a second successive Six Nations and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/live\/2017\/may\/13\/clermont-auvergne-v-saracens-european-champions-cup-final-live\" title=\"\">Saracens to a second European Champions Cup<\/a> but he was named European player of the year. He also played a leading part in the Lions tour, hitting every one of his penalty kicks in a thrilling drawn series.<\/p>\n<p>With no England male cricketer on the shortlist either \u2013 a surprise, given that Jimmy Anderson joined a rare club by taking <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/2017\/sep\/08\/jimmy-anderson-500-wickets-england-west-indies\" title=\"\">his 500th Test wicket in September<\/a> and Joe Root led his team to Test series wins over South Africa and West Indies, and averaged more than 56 with the bat \u2013 there may be questions about whether minor sports have too much sway.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"element element-atom\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"atom-Guide\">\n<p><strong>Anya Shrubsole (Cricket)<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>The 25-year-old took a match-winning six for 46 in the final as England\u2019s women beat Australia to win the World Cup<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mo Farah (Athletics)<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Ended a glorious track career with world championship gold over 10,000m in London in August<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chris Froome<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Another year, another yellow jersey. Froome won a fourth Tour de France and followed it up with Vuelta glory in Spain<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>Anthony Joshua (Boxing)<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Britain\u2019s world heavyweight champion got off the floor to stop the legendary Wladimir Klitschko in a thriller at Wembley<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>Elise Christie (Speed skating)<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Won the 1,000m, 1,500m and overall titles at the World Short Track Speed Skating Championships in March<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jonnie Peacock (Para-athletics)<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>The Strictly star was even more electric on the track, storming to 100m gold in the T44 Para-Athletics world championships<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>Harry Kane (Football)<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Scored 29 goals in 30 Spurs Premier League appearances last season and has shown no signs of slowing down since<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bianca Walkden (Taekwondo)<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Walkden claimed her second world title as well as winning grand prix events in London, Rabat and Moscow<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>Adam Peaty (Swimming) <\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>He won both the 50m and 100m world breaststroke titles and broke the 50m world record twice in the process<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>Johanna Konta (Tennis)<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Britain\u2019s best women\u2019s player in a generation won titles in Sydney and Miami and reached the Wimbledon semis<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lewis Hamilton (F1) <\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>His fourth Formula One drivers&#8217; championship made him Britain\u2019s most successful driver in history<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jonathan Rea (Motorcycling)<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Rea\u2019s brilliant performances in Superbikes this year earned him another world title \u2013 his third on the trot<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Unsurprisingly Joshua, whose <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/2017\/apr\/29\/anthony-joshua-beats-wladimir-klitschko-wembley-heavyweight-champion-round-11\" title=\"\">enthralling victory over Wladimir Klitschko<\/a> for the WBA, IBF and IBO world heavyweight titles at Wembley in April was watched by more than 80,000 people, is a short-priced favourite for the main award, which will be presented in Liverpool on 17 December. The bookies rate the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/2017\/jul\/23\/chris-froome-wins-fourth-tour-de-france\" title=\"\">four-times Tour de France winner, Chris Froome<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/2017\/oct\/29\/lewis-hamilton-formula-one-world-title-mexico-grand-prix-f1\" title=\"\">recent Formula One world champion, Lewis Hamilton<\/a>, and Mo Farah, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/2017\/aug\/04\/mo-farah-10000m-gold-world-athletics-championships\" title=\"\">won 10,000m gold in the world championships in London<\/a>, as his closest challengers.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"element element-rich-link element--thumbnail\">\n<p> <span>Related: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/2017\/nov\/27\/mark-foster-come-out-gay-swimming-interview\">Mark Foster: \u2018I tiptoed around in the shadows for so long, but now is the time to come out\u2019<\/a> <\/p>\n<\/aside>\n<p>Women\u2019s sport is also well represented with three world champions on the shortlist \u2013 the speed skater Elise Christie, taekwondo\u2019s Bianca Walkden and the cricketer Anya Shrubsole, whose brilliant six for 46 in the final <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/2017\/jul\/23\/england-india-womens-cricket-world-cup-final-match-report\" title=\"\">inspired England to World Cup glory<\/a>. Johanna Konta is included despite a dramatic slump in which she won only two matches after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/2017\/jul\/13\/venus-williams-wimbledon-final-straight-sets-defeat-johanna-konta-tennis\" title=\"\">reaching the Wimbledon semi-finals<\/a>. The Paralympian Jonnie Peacock, Spurs striker Harry Kane, swimmer Adam Peaty and world superbike champion Jonathan Rea complete the shortlist.
